BTL Emsella For Faecal Incontinence in Men

What is Faecal Incontinence?

Faecal incontinence (commonly known as bowel incontinence) is when bowel movements cannot be controlled efficiently, causing excrement to leak out of the rectum unintentionally, often resulting in discomfort or embarrassment.

This leakage can occur both with or without your knowledge, and is more common among older women than men, however, it is still a regular cause of concern for both.

The term faecal incontinence is used when any of these situations occur:

  • Stool leaks out when passing gas.
  • Stool leaks out due to physical activity/daily life exertions.
  • Feeling the sudden urge and not being able to make it to the bathroom in time.
  • Stool is seen in the underwear after a normal bowel movement.
  • There is a complete loss of bowel control.

What Are The Causes of Faecal Incontinence?

Stress or urge incontinence, often characterised by severe or long-lasting constipation or diarrhoea, is common among both men and women in later life.

Urge incontinence occurs when you have a sudden urge to use the bathroom but are unable to make it before a leak occurs. If you have urge incontinence, your pelvic floor or outer anal sphincter muscles may be too weak to hold back a bowel movement due to muscle injury or nerve damage.

When the anus, pelvic floor, or rectum are injured or weakened, you may not be able to keep your bowels closed, allowing stool to leak out.

These muscles can be injured or weakened in several ways including:

  • Surgery to remove cancer in the anus or rectum
  • The Removal of haemorrhoids
  • Treatment of anal abscesses and fistulas

Additionally, If the nerves that control your anus, pelvic floor, and rectum are damaged, the muscles can’t continue to work the way they should. Damage to the nerves that tell your brain when there is stool in your rectum makes it difficult to know when you need to use the toilet.

Nerves can be damaged by:

  • A long-term habit of straining to pass stool
  • A Brain injury
  • A Spinal cord injury

Other factors, particularly lifestyle choices and general health, include:

  • Medical conditions, particularly diabetes or heart conditions.
  • Tobacco use, which restricts blood flow to veins and arteries, and can – over time – cause chronic health conditions that lead to erectile dysfunction.
  • Being overweight, especially if you’re obese.
  • Certain medical treatments, such as prostate surgery or radiation treatment for cancer.
  • Injuries, particularly if they damage the nerves or arteries that control erections.
  • Medications, including antidepressants, antihistamines and medications to treat high blood pressure, pain or prostate conditions.
  • Psychological conditions, such as stress, anxiety or depression.
  • Drug and alcohol use, especially if you’re a long-term drug user or heavy drinker.

How Does BTL Emsella Treat Faecal Incontinence?

By targeting the pelvic floor muscles with High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology, BTL Esmella stimulates the muscles, tightens the pelvic floor and gives you back control of your bowels.

During the BTL Emsella treatment, electromagnetic currents directly stimulate the pelvic floor muscles and anal sphincter beyond the level that can be consciously achieved through Kegel or other pelvic floor exercises, drastically cutting down the time between your first visit to a GP and recommendation for medical treatment if necessary.

This achieves far stronger contractions, giving your pelvic muscles a far better workout; the equivalent of over 11,000 Kegel exercises in one treatment.

BTL Emsella treatment also changes the structure of the muscles by stimulating the growth of new protein strands and muscle fibres to improve the physical action of the muscles overall!

    Frequently Asked Questions

The results of BTL Emsella treatment can be seen as soon as after the first treatment in some women. However, we recommend a minimum course length of ten weekly treatments (preferably two sessions per week) to see optimum results from the treatment, and most people see and feel some results after two or three treatment sessions.

The procedure is not at all painful, and many people bring along friends or family to chat to during treatment. You may also want to bring a book or magazine to read while on the Emsella chair or we can always have a good conversation or two!

Some women feel the tensing and relaxing of the pelvic floor muscles during treatment, but this has been described as a very similar sensation to regular kegel exercises, and isn't uncomfortable.

A single BTL Emsella treatment takes less than half an hour - 28 minutes to be precise!

While some women will feel results after the first treatment, a minimum of 8-10 weekly or bi-weekly sessions is appropriate to feel the optimum results of BTL Emsella. We'll tailor your treatment plan to you and your body to create the most effective results but we offer more treatment sessions than any other clinic for your money. This is because, being the longest standing Emsella clinic in the Northwest, we have over five years experience of women and men's incontinence issues and know that six treatment sessions is not enough for the majority of people. Please keep this in mind when looking for the best clinic for you.

If you are struggling with stress incontinence, BTL Emsella might be the perfect treatment for you.

BTL Emsella can improve the symptoms of stress incontinence caused by menopause or childbirth, as well as other intimate health conditions, including vaginal laxity and difficulty reaching orgasm.

However, if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, have metal plates in your body, such as hip replacements or if you have a copper coil or IUD, then BTL Emsella is not suitable for you, and we can help give you the information you need to choose a different treatment in these cases. You should also remove any intimate piercings before treatment with BTL Emsella, and you cannot use Emsella when on your period as the treatment increases blood flow to the area!
